  DEDICATION

This one is for my brothers and sisters in blue. Since I pulled the pin, we can finally write stories with you all as the inspiration and show everyone that we’re people too, not just a uniform. Be safe and know that I will always miss standing shoulder to shoulder with you while you hold that thin blue line.

On a fun note, I really did come up with the drink tinglers, described in the book, and they do work as advertised. Lol. Enjoy!

  Chapter 1

“Man, I hope they hurry up. I’m starving.” Liam McCulloch ran his hands through his hair, looking around the diner they’d stopped at for lunch. He focused on one door that he suspected led to the kitchen, trying to will the petite, pretty blonde waitress back through it.

“Me, too,” answered his partner, Jeremy Knight. “I hope that little cutie that seated us serves it. I do like a little scenery with my food. What did her nametag say? Ginny?”

“Yeah, I think so. She was a hottie,” Liam answered, still staring at the kitchen door. “If all the girls around here—”

Jeremy interrupted him. “So a guy in a hoodie and a Batman mask and one with Spiderman walk up behind a little old lady—”

“What the fuck, dude?” Liam glowered at him. “You interrupt me for what has to be the worst joke setup in history?”

“Yeah, that would be a bad one if it were a joke. But seriously, look.” Jeremy pointed through the large plate-glass window at the sidewalk in front of the diner.

Liam turned to see what Jeremy was pointing at. Two men were walking up behind an elderly woman who was approaching the building. The men were of average height and build and would have been completely unmemorable if they hadn’t been wearing hoodies pulled up over their heads and cinched down to hold cheap plastic masks over their faces—Batman on the right and Spiderman on the left.

“We have to get out there and do something.” Jeremy bolted up from his molded plastic seat and was out the door before Liam could even open his mouth to protest.

“Damn it, Jeremy,” Liam called after him, jumping up to follow. “This isn’t our jurisdiction. Remember the rule. When it’s not your sandbox, just be a good witness.”

As he rushed after his friend and shift partner, he nearly ran into a tall blonde waitress whose nametag read Carly. He was disappointed it wasn’t the one he and Jeremy had seen earlier, but she was still cute.

He was barely aware that she yelled “Hey!” as he hit the door.

“Be right back. Can you get us a couple of burgers?” he called over his shoulder, praying that she would hear him. Outside, the older woman had been knocked to the ground and the two bad guys had taken off running, presumably having gotten her purse. Hopefully Carly would notice and come out to help her, but he had something more important to do at the moment. He broke left after the hooded men and his friend, chuckling as he saw Jeremy running easily next to Spiderman.

He could hear his partner saying, “You know, if you pumped your arms more i
t might help. But trying to breathe in that mask has just got to suck.”

The man grunted something that sounded like “Fuck you” through noisy lungfuls of air. Liam could see that Batman was no more than a dozen steps ahead of Jeremy with the old woman’s purse clutched in one hand.

Damn, he thought, wishing he had a dollar for every time he’d seen Jeremy pull this stunt. Sure it was funny and made for a great story over beers with the guys in the unit, but it was dangerous as hell and was going to get him hurt one of these days.

Pretty much the same thing had happened last week when they were busting that kid for the smash and grab at the 7-11. The difference was that kid had a 9mm in his pocket. Jeremy, the silly bastard, had been damn lucky he hadn’t gotten shot that day. Liam couldn’t remember ever seeing Sgt. Montoch so angry, especially since he’d been warning the whole unit the day before to be more careful. They’d just been through the whole ordeal of Hondo’s shooting, and everybody was a little edgy about it. So when Sarge had told them to not let him see their faces for at least a week, they had decided to go on this impromptu vacation. Jeremy had been surfing the net and suggested, mostly as a joke, that they visit a kinky bed and breakfast he’d found. Supposedly something interesting was happening—Jeremy had mentioned that they were hosting some kind of hunting event. What that had to do with BDSM Liam wasn’t sure, but Jeremy seemed excited, so he’d come along for the ride. Besides, Jeremy had gone on and on about how there were a bunch of other parties filling out the week and that it would have been a crime to not check them out.

Liam was now within a few steps of the pair in front of him. If these two wanted to continue in this line of crime they really should have worked on their cardio more. They just weren’t very fast runners.

Jeremy glanced back at him. “Well, this has been fun, but I need to get your buddy.” Then he thrust his hand in front of Spiderman just before putting on a burst of speed that propelled him ahead.

The man reacted as expected and jerked his head back. It slowed him momentarily, which gave Liam the opening he was waiting for. He lowered his shoulder and executed a tackle that would have made his high-school football coach proud. They went down to the sidewalk hard. All the wind left the asshole’s lungs with a satisfying “Oof” and he lay on the ground gasping for air.

Liam jerked the man’s hands behind him in an arm bar that would keep him under control until backup arrived. He heard a yelled “Stop, police!” and looked up to see Jeremy bring Batman to the ground in a bone-crunching pile of twisted limbs.

Jeremy handcuffed Batman quickly and efficiently, then helped him to his feet, walking him back to where Liam was still kneeling on his prisoner. The woman’s purse was swinging from one hand, and the other held the chain between the two cuffs. Jeremy grinned at Liam, as if this was his usual morning exercise. “What the hell are you waiting for? Cuff him.”

“Well, excuse me for not having any cuffs on me, you fuck,” Liam snarled back, annoyed. “We’re supposed to be on vacation.”

“Really?” The astonishment in Jeremy’s voice couldn’t be missed. “We came to stay at a kinky resort and you didn’t bring cuffs? I thought it was a requirement to get in the door. Damn, I can’t take you anywhere.”

“You’re an asshole. Our burgers are getting cold, and you know how I hate soggy fries.” Liam tried to sound gruff, but he was unable to keep the smile off his face at his partner’s infectious good humor.

“No problem. Here comes the cavalry. I bet they have cuffs.” Jeremy pointed at the patrol car rounding the corner, its lights and siren going. “Besides, now we’re heroes. Getting Ginny’s number will be a snap.”

“Right, a snap.” Liam turned to face the squad car as it skidded to a halt in front of them.

“Hey, Chuck, why were you giving those guys directions to Clifftop?” Carly put a cup of coffee and a muffin in front of the officer as he finished collecting the witness statements from the other patrons in the diner.

“Thanks, Carly.” He took a grateful swig of the hot, dark liquid and swallowed the muffin in two bites while he tapped the papers into a neat stack. “They’re a couple of cops from out of town here for the hunt this weekend.”

Carly waggled her eyebrows. “Oh, goody. They were hot. Brave, too, to chase those thugs down like that. It’ll be fun to see some fresh meat for the games.” She giggled and poked her head through the swinging door to the kitchen. “Ginny, now you have to come with me this weekend.”

A voice came distantly back to her. “What? Why?”

Carly glanced at Chuck and smiled. “Because those two hot guys are going to be there. If you’re lucky, maybe they’ll hunt you.”

“That’s just mean, you know.” Chuck stood and started toward the door. “Didn’t she refuse to give them her number?”

“Yeah. That’s what makes it so much fun.” Carly giggled. “She was just being silly. They’ll be back, and I bet they won’t take no for an answer next time.”

“Both of them? You think?” Chuck paused at the door, glancing out in the direction that the two strange men had gone.

“I do. I have a feeling.” Carly winked at him before going back into the kitchen to torture her employee some more.

“The turnoff that cop told us about should be right up here somewhere,” Liam said, scanning the road ahead. “What were the odds that the first brother in blue we run into is in the local kink community?”

“No kidding. Oh hey, there it is.” Jeremy pointed, then continued in an amused tone. “What do you know? The sign really does say we might encounter nudity. I thought the website was just kidding about that. Boy, I sure hope it’s true. Ginny didn’t seem to like it too much, though, when I asked her if she ever frolics naked out here.”

“Do you ever think before you open your mouth?” Liam glanced over at his partner as he pulled into the driveway marked by the sign that said “Clifftop Fantasies.”

“Who, me? Of course not. Where would the fun of that be?” Jeremy laughed, opening his door as the vehicle rolled to a stop. “Come on, let’s get checked in.” He grabbed his suitcase and trotted confidently up the steps to the house.

Liam collected his bag and followed, looking around in appreciation. Clifftop Fantasies was a beautiful house, large and yellow, with a wraparound front porch and an inviting green lawn, surrounded by a thick forest on all sides, including the front. It was an ideal place for naked frolicking, although he couldn’t blame the cute blonde for freaking out. They didn’t even know if she was familiar with this place. If there hadn’t been a sign he would never have guessed a house sat back here, much less a BDSM resort. Stepping through the front door, he saw that Jeremy was already chatting up the attractive woman who was standing behind the small desk in the front hallway.

“If you’ll each just fill out this registration card and read the rules and disclaimer forms, we’ll get you settled into your rooms.” She gave Liam a smile as she handed a small stack of paper to each of them.

Suddenly from outside there was the sound of a voice yelling. “Shit! Get that, quick.”

Liam dropped the pen he had just picked up and looked at his partner. He knew Jeremy’s ears would have pricked up like a dog who’s heard barking in the vicinity.

The woman glanced toward the back of the house. “Excuse me. I’d better go see if they need help out there.”

“We’ll go, ma’am.” Before she could even move, Jeremy had taken off toward the sound. He didn’t wait for an answer, obviously confident that Liam would follow. They had worked together long enough and been through enough mud and blood to know the other would have their back no matter what the situation.

Liam did. There was no one he trusted more than Jeremy, despite his often smartass attitude. Liam knew that when it was game time Jeremy would be effective and dependable, even if he did like to show off a little.

They rushed back through the front door and around the si
de of the house before stopping abruptly. Across the yard four men were struggling with a large canvas photograph in a ten-by-eight-foot wooden setting. A strong wind had obviously caught the frame before the men could anchor it and they appeared to be struggling to do so before it was torn apart. Jeremy and Liam rushed to help, adding their strength and weight to the pitched battle with the elements. Within minutes they had the structure bolted to wooden posts in the ground.

Once the frame was secured, they stepped back to survey their handiwork. Liam looked up in confusion at the brightly colored picture. “What the hell is this thing?”

Jeremy slapped his back. “Who cares? It’s sexy as hell. I told you we were going to like this place.”

Staring at the glossy picture, Liam had to agree that it was hot. It showed three women wearing nothing but fox ears and butt plug foxtails. Besides the woman who had greeted them, there was a sexy dark-haired girl and the tall blonde from the diner. Each was at a different height on the picture, posing on their hands and knees. It was obvious they were pretending to be foxes, but for the life of him, Liam couldn’t figure out what purpose the picture was serving. He turned to the large man who was double-checking the attachments. “Not that I don’t appreciate your taste in art, but what the hell is it?”

The man finished what he was doing and turned toward him, extending a hand. “Thanks for the help. Damn thing almost got away from us. My name is Karl.” He was tall and broad, with a rugged and authoritative look. Liam wondered if he’d ever been a cop or in the military. He had that kind of bearing.
